In the residential sector, an interior designer can offer so much more than styling. At DfL Interior Design, we can design your entire home, renovation and extension or can work with your architect / building designer to refine spaces such as kitchens, bathrooms and storage areas.

An interior designer considers design from a different point of view than an architect or building designer. They tend to design from the outside in, whereas an interior designer works inside out. Very few of us sit in our cars after a long day at work and stare in wonder at our beautiful home. Most of us drive straight into the carport, barely glancing up, trying to stop the kids in the back seat from killing each other, tumble out of the car and head straight to our favourite room.
We live INSIDE a home. It needs to accommodate our lives and be adaptable as we grow.

That’s not to say that architects don’t design practical homes [shout out to Cameron at Innovate Architects www.innovate.com.au] and interior designers don’t consider the street presence [shout out to Sara at One Property www.oneproperty.com.au]. Rather, we view spaces from a different perspective and prioritize different aspects of the design. For instance, one of the biggest disputes I have had with architects is the location of windows. I worked with one who located all the windows so high that when seated, you couldn’t see the view; and this was for an aged care facility where everyone spent their day in chairs. Another insisted that windows had to align on the exterior and as a result, the client wasn’t able to install the television he wanted as it wouldn’t fit on the living room wall.
Thanks again Google.
Interior designers also take this “inside out” approach to custom cabinetry design and FF&E [Furniture, fixtures and equipment] selections. For instance, when designing your kitchen, we start by talking with you about how you cook and what appliances you use then design a kitchen to fit these. We will determine whether you really do need the steam oven, microwave oven and a normal oven. We look at your normal beauty regime and design the bathroom for you. We won’t give you a double shower, a large freestanding tub and two basins if you don’t need it just because it is the fashion. This means that the money you spend on the most expensive zones in your home is spent the most effectively. I love working with architects / building designers to refine these spaces to ensure your home is a reflection of your lifestyle, both now and for the future.
